Most dental adhesives are rather hydrophobic, they separate from water. With too much water on the prepared surface, these adhesives fail to cover the prepared surface uniformly. During air-drying, adhesive gaps can form due to embedded pockets of water evaporating, increasing the risks of post-operative sensitivity and bond failure.

Balances Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Properties
Patented Active-Guard™ technology balances hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties and helps achieve optimal surface tension. Prime&Bond active® universal adhesive with Active-Guard™ technology thus overcomes the surface tension of water, allowing the dental adhesive to spread evenly across the dentin and into the dentinal tubules to form a uniform, homogeneous layer.
When the adhesive is air-dried, solvent and excess water evaporate leaving a thin, consistent coating of adhesive across the entire surface. The result is a strong, reliable bond, with virtually no post-operative sensitivity. In a user survey with more than 2,000 restorations, the incidence of post-operative sensitivity was less than 0.2% using Prime&Bond active® universal adhesive.
