Provided is a polycarbonate-modified acrylic resin obtained by reacting an unsaturated monomer mixture (B), which contains methyl methacrylate, unsaturated monomers with a hydroxyl group (b1), unsaturated monomers with a carboxyl group (b2), and unsaturated monomers (b3) with a C2-C8 alkyl group (b3) as essential components, in the presence of a polycarbonate diol (A) that has 1,5-pentanediol and 1,6-hexanediol as starting materials, wherein the mass ratio of the unsaturated monomers (b2) in the unsaturated monomer mixture (B) is in the range of 0.1-1.6 mass%. Said polycarbonate-modified acrylic resin can be used favorably as a coating because the resin is highly adhesive to plastic substrates and coating films of excellent abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, feel and appearance can be obtained.
